Farmers/Local Businesses

SUSTAINABILITY | Farmers/Local Businesses | Profile of Local Growers & Businesses | Green Team | Reusable To Go Containers | Get Involved

Food is a part of our daily lives. What we eat, how it gets to us, the ways in which it is grown, produced, and/or processed - all of these things have far-reaching effects on our society and our environment. As part of Gator Dining’s commitment to sustainability, we strive to source as much of our food from local sources as possible.

We place preference on purchasing locally in three tiers:

1. From within 250 miles of campus
2. Within the state of Florida
3. Within the Southeast U.S. (GA, AL, TN, SC, NC, MS)

We would love the opportunity to work with your farm. Please see below for information on our supplier partners including their requirements as well as the various services they provide to ensure the success of our farm to school program.

Fresh Point
Locations: Jacksonville, FL and Gainesville, FL

Requirements:
- Continuing Hold Harmless, Indemnification and Guaranty / Warranty of Product Agreement.
- Certificate of Insurance evidencing General Liability Limits of $1,000,000, Per Occurrence
- Good Agricultural Practices Compliance Program Verification.

Services:
- Farmers Market Program: A Fresh Point-sponsored supplemental insurance policy to cover farms unable to meet the $1,000,000 coverage. They will qualify to fall into this group and not have to front the expense to meet this requirement.
- GAP Assistance: Fresh Point assists growers with GAP compliance. By assessing a farm’s current level of GAP program implementation, a “tool bag” of resources is then developed that can help the local grower comply with GAP.

Produce Distribution Center
Location: Jacksonville, FL

Requirements:
- Good Agricultural Practices
- Provide photos and/or short bios on farm for customer education.

Services:
- "Our Own Backyard": This program is aimed specifically at the many small farmers in North Florida who are looking for a fresh new market for their produce. Produce Distribution Center will work with local farmers who might not be able to meet the stringent requirements for foodservice sales on their own. They will help farmers to safely get their product to the warehouse and ensure the proper packaging, presenting it to the chefs and operators as a premium local product from “Our Own Backyard”. They will do this while endeavoring to provide a fair, supportive price for the produce to the farmer. It is their goal that the farmers feel this to be a profitable system that helps keep their produce sold.
